Guidelines for Emergency Procedures

Saint Brendan High School Response Plan for:

  • Another 9/11

We want to assure you that your child’s safety is uppermost in our minds, and to that end, we want to explain what our procedures will be in case of another “9/11 type” emergency to facilitate an early dismissal.

In case it is needed, the administration will instruct all the students to proceed to their homerooms. Faculty and staff will be at different posts throughout the school to instruct parents on where to pick up their children.

Students will be in their homerooms and will be released as indicated by the parent/guardian in the student release form that was given to each student. It is of the utmost importance that your child’s homeroom teacher has this form filled out and signed by a parent/guardian.

  • Fire Evacuation

The fire alarm is a continuous sounding alarm that sounds when activated and continuous until deactivated. The fire alarm is set one of two ways:

    1. The automated system will detect a fire and will activate automatically
    2. The person discovering the fire shall initiate the pull alarm immediately

Once the alarm is activated the Fire Department will be contacted.

    Teacher Responsibilities

    1. Suspend instruction immediately.
    2. Evacuate class (Take with you Seating Chart / Grade Book).
    3. Turn off the lights.
    4. Students are to exit on a quiet organized manner.
    5. Do not lock the doors.
    6. Exit building immediately utilizing the pre-designated evacuation routes located on the wall adjacent to the exit door of the classroom.
    7. Once you are in the designated area, account for all students and report any missing student immediately to the administrator designated for attendance.
    8. Return to the classroom only when the principal or the principal’s designee announce the Clear Bell.
  • Lockdown

A lockdown follows any incident occurring at an off campus location that could possibly put St. Brendan High School students and staff in danger. This could include but not be limited to armed and/or dangerous persons in the vicinity of the school, escaped criminals in the area, chemical spills, extreme weather conditions and terrorism.

When the proper authorities notify the school that a critical incident has occurred in the area or is life threatening, the principal will declare the emergency.

    1. Lock the doors in the classroom and account for all students.
    2. Turn off the lights and report through intercom students who might not be in class (e.g. in the restroom, media center, guidance, main office, etc.).
    3. Do not allow anyone to leave the classroom, and keep students away from all windows and doorway.
    4. Do not admit anyone except Police, Emergency Personnel, or Administrator
    5. Students are to remain quiet at all times and be prepared for instructions.
